As the long, sunny days of summer begin to fade, it’s time to shift our focus to the upcoming fall season. The change in weather not only brings cooler temperatures and vibrant foliage but also the need to prepare our homes for the months ahead. A thorough seasonal cleaning now can make your home more comfortable, safe, and ready for fall activities. Here’s a helpful guide to ensure your home is in top shape for the season.

1. Store Summer Items Properly

As summer ends, it’s essential to store away items like patio furniture, pool equipment, and outdoor toys to protect them from the elements. Here’s how to do it right:

  • Clean Before Storage: Wipe down outdoor furniture to remove dirt, pollen, and any potential mold or mildew. Store cushions in a dry, cool place, and consider covering furniture to protect it from dust and debris during the off-season.

  • Pool Maintenance: If you have a pool, now is the time to clean it thoroughly before closing. Store pool toys, inflatables, and cleaning equipment in a dry, safe place.

  • Garden Tools and Equipment: Clean and oil your garden tools to prevent rust. Store them in a shed or garage where they’ll be protected from moisture.

2. Get Your Fireplace Ready

Fall means cozy nights by the fire, but before you light the first log, make sure your fireplace is clean and safe:

  • Chimney Sweep: Schedule a professional chimney sweep to remove soot, creosote, and any blockages that could cause a fire hazard. Regular maintenance ensures your fireplace operates efficiently.

  • Inspect for Damage: Check the chimney for cracks, loose bricks, or other damage. Also, make sure the flue is working properly and the damper opens and closes with ease.

  • Stock Up on Wood: If you use a wood-burning fireplace, now is the time to stock up on firewood. Store it in a dry place, away from your home, to prevent pests from entering.

3. Clean and Organize Your Outdoor Space

As leaves begin to fall, your outdoor space requires extra attention to prevent clutter and potential damage:

  • Leaf Removal: Regularly rake and remove leaves from your lawn, driveway, and gutters. Leaving them can lead to mold, mildew, and clogged gutters that cause water damage.

  • Gutter Cleaning: Ensure that your gutters are clean and free of debris. Clogged gutters can lead to water overflow, which may damage your roof and siding.

  • Prune and Trim: Trim bushes, trees, and hedges to keep them healthy and prevent overgrowth that can damage your home’s exterior during fall storms.

4. Deep Clean Inside Your Home

As you prepare to spend more time indoors, a deep clean can refresh your home and remove summer’s dust and allergens:

  • Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures: Dust ceiling fans and clean light fixtures to prevent the spread of dust when you turn them on as the weather cools.

  • Windows and Screens: Clean windows and remove screens for storage if they won’t be used in the fall. This not only enhances your view but also maximizes the natural light during shorter days.

  • Vacuum Upholstery and Carpets: Summer brings in more dirt and allergens, which can get trapped in your upholstery and carpets. A deep vacuum, possibly followed by professional cleaning, can eliminate these pollutants and refresh your living spaces.

5. HVAC System Maintenance

Your heating system will be working overtime in the fall, so make sure it’s ready:

  • Replace Air Filters: Dirty filters reduce efficiency and can spread allergens throughout your home. Replace them regularly to keep your HVAC system running smoothly.

  • Schedule a Tune-Up: Have a professional inspect and service your heating system to ensure it’s ready for the colder months. Regular maintenance can prevent costly repairs and improve energy efficiency.

Preparing your home for fall doesn’t have to be daunting. By taking these steps now, you can ensure a smooth transition into the cooler months and enjoy a clean, comfortable, and safe living environment. Please Note

All quotes provided by The Virginia Cleaning Co. are estimates and are subject to adjustment based on the actual size, condition, and cleaning needs of the residence upon arrival.

The Virginia Cleaning Co. is a residential cleaning company specializing in recurring house cleaning and general household upkeep. While we strive to accommodate a wide range of residential cleaning needs, we do not provide hazardous-material or remediation services.

Our team does not clean or remediate biological, chemical, radiological, or other potentially hazardous materials or conditions that may pose a risk to people, animals, our team members, or the environment. If our team encounters a condition that we reasonably believe requires specialized remediation or presents a safety concern, we reserve the right to decline or discontinue the affected portion of the service.

Payment & Property Access Policy

By scheduling cleaning services with The Virginia Cleaning Co., the client acknowledges and agrees to our service policies.

Payments made toward scheduled services are non-refundable, except where otherwise required by applicable law.

Clients are responsible for ensuring that our cleaning team can safely access the property at the scheduled service time. This includes providing any necessary keys, entry codes, gate codes, security instructions, or other means of access.

If our team is unable to access the residence due to circumstances outside of our control—including the client's absence, an incorrect or unavailable access code, locked doors, inaccessible gates, or similar circumstances—the scheduled payment will not be refunded or credited toward a completed cleaning.

We will be happy to assist with rescheduling the service for another mutually agreeable date, subject to availability and our applicable rescheduling policies.

Cancellation Policy & Recurring Cleaning Discount

The Virginia Cleaning Co. offers preferred pricing to clients who schedule ongoing recurring cleaning services.

Recurring pricing is based on the client's commitment to an ongoing cleaning schedule. If a client receives a discounted recurring rate for their initial cleaning and cancels recurring service before completion of the second scheduled visit, the recurring discount applied to the initial service will be forfeited.

The initial cleaning will then be repriced at our applicable one-time cleaning rate of $0.15 per square foot, and the client will be responsible for the difference between the discounted amount originally paid and the applicable one-time cleaning rate.

This policy allows us to offer preferred pricing to our recurring clients while maintaining fair and consistent pricing across our services.

We kindly request 24–48 hours' notice when cancelling or rescheduling an appointment. Cancellations or rescheduling requests made with less than the required notice may be subject to a $25 service fee.
